Leonard Kruimer, Chair

Leonard (Leon) Kruimer is Chief Financial Officer of Crucell since 1998 and is a member of Crucell’s Management Board and Management Committee. Prior to Crucell, he held interim executive positions at Pepsico and Royal Boskalis Westminster. From 1993 to 1995, he was Managing Director Continental Europe at TIP Europe, a unit of GE Capital. Prior he held senior executive positions at Kwik-Fit Europe and Continental Can Europe. He was a consultant with McKinsey & Co and started his career at Price Waterhouse & Co in New York. He holds an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts. He is a CPA in New York State.            

Francesco de Rubertis

Francesco de Rubertis is a Partner in Index Ventures’ life sciences practice. He joined Index in 1998 and has served on the board of numerous companies including Genmab, Bioxell, Addex, Parallele, 7TM and Pangenetics. Prior to joining Index, Francesco was involved in post-doctoral research in genetics at the Whitehead Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also the author of several publications in international scientific journals. Francesco has a BA in Genetics and Microbiology from the University of Pavia and a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Geneva. He is also a CFA charter holder.

Dirk Kersten, MSc – Director

Dirk Kersten is a partner at Gilde Healthcare Partners, which he joined in 2002. Prior to joining Gilde Healthcare Partners he worked in corporate finance and consulting and was involved in numerous M&A transactions, private placements and consulting projects. At Gilde Mr Kersten was involved in the investments in GlycArt Biotechnology and Chroma Therapeutics, while he led Gilde’s investments in Acacia Pharma, Ascendis Pharma and Symphogen. Mr Kersten represents Gilde on the boards of Ascendis and Symphogen. Mr Kersten holds a masters in science with a degree in applied physics from the University of Groningen.   

Alain Parthoens

Alain Parthoens is a Partner at Vesalius Biocapital. He is an experienced business expert and investor in the food and life science industry. Alain worked in marketing, business and product development as well as in strategic planning for Nestlé, Kemira, and Monsanto. Thereafter he was a consultant at PwC for the pharmaceutical industry. As investment director at ING he invested in a range of biotechnology companies and serves on the boards of Unibioscreen and MDxHealth as well as of the Belgian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association. Mr. Parthoens holds a M.Sc. in agronomy from the University of Louvain, an M.Sc. in finance and computer sciences from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and a management degree from the Solvay Business School.

Victor W. Schmitt

Victor (Vic) Schmitt, MBA, is a Venture Partner with Bay City Capital, and he serves on the board of directors of a number of development-stage biotech companies. Since 1994, he was President, Venture Management, at Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Prior to this position, he held the operating position of President, Baxter Biotech Europe. He has also served as Vice President, Business Development and Finance for Baxter Healthcare's Blood Therapy Group. Mr. Schmitt joined Baxter Healthcare from a sixteen-year career with the American Red Cross Blood Services, where he held positions in marketing and operations and his last position was Vice President, Blood Services with responsibility for the organization’s national blood services program. Mr. Schmitt holds a BS from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the University of Maryland.
